Special Guest Presenters and Video Content Partner for 2020 Camp
Expanding on its goal to provide meaningful off-ice and on-ice training, and to create an atmosphere of interactive learning and fun, the organizers of the Tim Peel Camp are excited to announce its first confirmed 2020 guest presenters. Retired NHL referee Don Koharski, along with his son Jamie, will be attending the 2020 camp in St. Louis.
Born in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Don Koharski began his officiating career in the World Hockey Association in 1975 at the age of 19. In 1977, he was hired by the NHL as a linesman, but moved to referee in 1980. Regarded as one of the top referees in NHL history, Don has worked more than 1,800 NHL regular season games, 262 playoff games, and 11 Stanley Cup Finals. According to NHL Director of Officiating Stephen Walkom, “Koho has had an outstanding career as an NHL referee which spanned an impressive 28 plus seasons. The respect he has garnered is reflected in his relationships with players, coaches and teammates.”
Jamie Koharski began his officiating career with the Missouri Ice Hockey Officials Association while attending middle school and high school in the St. Louis area. In addition to working local youth and high school leagues in St. Louis, Jamie moved up the ranks officiating at various junior and minor pro levels throughout the Midwest. Jamie was hired by the AHL in 2004 and refereed more than 850 games over 12 seasons. Since retiring from the AHL in 2016, Jamie has moved over to officiating NCAA men’s hockey for the Hockey East Conference where he has refereed in four NCAA tournaments including three Frozen Four national championships.
Of having the Koharskis as part of his 2020 camp, Tim Peel said, “Koho is a veteran with tons of experience, stories and a great perspective about officiating. And the fact that Jamie climbed the local St. Louis officiating ladder, makes their attendance at our camp that much more special.”
The Koharski’s most recent project is the Don Koharski Master Course, presented by Team Stripes Academy. The course is a premium online training platform featuring video content that teaches officials about fundamentals, positioning and the mental game. With a commitment to training and retaining officials, Team Stripes is a community of hockey officials from around the world.
The Tim Peel Referee Camp is pleased to announce that Team Stripes will be the camp’s exclusive video content partner. Don and Jamie Koharski will be utilizing the high-quality Team Stripes video tools of the Don Koharski Master Course during the camp to help train and educate campers.
The 2020 Tim Peel Referee Camp is scheduled for June 5-7, 2020 at the Maryville University Hockey Center in St. Louis. All proceeds from the camp will benefit the Bill McKenna Scholarship Foundation, an organization that encourages young people to participate in St. Louis hockey as officials. The foundation provides fiscal support to students for post-secondary education in college or vocational school programs.
